FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, October 13th, 2009 – The Chairperson of the Military Police Complaints Commission, Peter A. Tinsley, will call to order the Public Interest Hearings related to complaints about military police conduct in Afghanistan.
The panel will render its decision on three motions to adjourn the hearings brought by counsel representing the subjects of the complaints. Five motions or submission remain to be heard by the panel before evidence will be called. No witnesses will be called on October 14th.
The hearings focus on allegations that certain members of the military police failed to investigate senior officers in the chain of command who had responsibility for directing the transfer of detainees to the Afghan authorities, allegedly in the face of the risk of torture.
