FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, February 23, 2010 – The Military Police Complaints Commission would like to officially announce that Glenn Stannard, Acting Chairperson, will join Roy Berlinquette on the panel for the Public Interest Hearings related to a complaint about military police conduct in Afghanistan.
The Commission is receiving the necessary documentation to proceed with the hearings and will proceed as planned. The hearings will resume on Wednesday March 24th, 2010. The Commission will initially hear motions and submissions from the Parties and issue rulings as necessary. The Commission anticipates it will then begin to hear evidence from the witnesses in the week of April 5, 2010. A list of the witnesses to appear before the Panel and a schedule of the hearings will be available as we get closer to the hearings.
The hearings focus on allegations that certain members of the military police failed to investigate potential offences which may have resulted from the transfer of detainees to the Afghan authorities, allegedly in the face of a risk of torture.
