FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, March 18, 2010 – The Panel members of the Military Police Complaints Commission, Glenn Stannard and Roy Berlinquette, will call to order the Public Interest Hearings related to complaints regarding military police conduct in Afghanistan. The hearings will resume on Wednesday March 24th, 2010.
The Commission will initially hear motions and submissions from the Parties and issue rulings as necessary. Evidence will begin to be heard as of April 6th 2010 and a schedule of witnesses to appear before the Panel will be made public when available. The Commission anticipates the hearing of evidence will last approximately six weeks.
The hearings focus on allegations that certain members of the military police failed to investigate senior officers in the chain of command who had responsibility for directing the transfer of detainees to the Afghan authorities, allegedly in the face of the risk of torture.
Details
This session is open to the media. Videographers and photographers will be permitted to move around the Hearing Room until the Commission Chairperson calls the session to order. Reserved seating for members of the media will be limited to the first three rows on the right hand side of the room. Space constraint may determine the amount of seats available for members of the media (including the number of cameras permitted into the room – feed pooling might be required), therefore confirmation of attendance prior to 2 p.m. on Tuesday March 23rd would be strongly recommended.
Transcripts of the hearing will be available through the Commission.
