OTTAWA, April 20, 2010 – The Military Police Complaints Commission’s (MPCC) Annual Report was tabled in Parliament on Monday April 19th, 2010 by The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence.
The overall theme of this year’s report is “A Decade of Oversight
”, which is particularly appropriate as the Commission celebrated its 10th anniversary in December 2009. This theme very aptly reflects the Commission’s important legacy of progress, contributions and accomplishments over the past ten years providing independent civilian oversight of the Canadian Forces Military Police.
This annual report reflects upon 2009 which has been a busy and productive year monitoring and investigating new complaints, concluding ongoing complaints from the previous year as well as continuing with the Afghanistan Public Interest Hearings. For the fourth consecutive year, the Commission has received 100% acceptance from the Canadian Forces of its recommendations.
Mr. Stannard, Acting Chairperson, noted “… the Commission’s impressive accomplishments and its positive contributions over the past ten years, in collaboration with the Canadian Forces Provost Marshal, to promoting the highest standards of military police conduct.
”

Established by Parliament in 1998, the role of the MPCC is to provide for greater public accountability by the military police and the chain of command in relation to military police conduct and investigations.
